Purpose of Prophecy
1) God Will Protect his People
Isaiah 42:5-9
This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out,
who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
who gives breath to its people,
and life to those who walk on it:
6 “I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
7 to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
8 “I am the Lord; that is my name!
I will not yield my glory to another
or my praise to idols.
9 See, the former things have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce them to you.”
God declares to his people in slavery, no doubt feeling like he had abandoned them, that he had a plan. He told them he would send a saviour who would free them and others from their prisons, from their blindness and from being in the darkness.
This same God who created the heaven’s and the earth and gives all people breath is the God who cares for and will rescue his people.
This scripture shows that what has come to pass and what will come to be have already been foretold to those who will listen. God says that he will announce them to us and specifically to those sitting in darkness.
His foretelling of future events informs us that he is watching over his people and will always protect them and that he has a plan for their lives.
His prophetic words ensure us that what he has said will happen and they can be an anchor for our souls.
