We reach the 8th most popular objection to the Bible.
Does the Bible support slavery?
We can answer this objection with the following points:
1) Not God ordained system – Slavery as we understand it today was invented by sinful man. Just because something is in the Bible doesn’t mean it is supported.
Consider King David, described as a man after God’s own heart. He committed adultery and then as a result murdered the women’s husband.
This is described in the Bible, but is not in there to support this behaviour. The Bible is raw and reveals the true nature of all mankind and their sin.
2) Biblical Slavery was very different from modern slavery.
The Greek and Hebrew words can be just as easily translated as servant.
The word doulos and scripture indicate that, people would sell themselves into slavery (Deut 15:12) based on their economic or social status, as opposed to being kidnapped as we hear about today.
Kidnapping was explicitly forbidden by God – Exodus 21:16.
3) God issues strict instructions on a “slaves” treatment.
Slaves were to have all the rights of a family member – Leviticus 22:11
Were allowed to rest on the Sabbath – Exodus 20:10
Were to be given refuge and be looked after – Deuteronomy 23:15
They were to be let go and given gifts and provisions ensuring their safety – Deuteronomy 15:12-15
The New Testament also indicates that they should be treated with respect – Ephesians 6:5-9
“Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.”
1 Corinthians 7:23 indicates that we should never become the slave of any man.
“You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings.”
